DESCRIPTION:“Fish on!!”  That’s what you want most to hear when you’re in the Belwood Lions Pike Derby\, because the prizes and bragging rights are worth reeling it in. The longest pike takes the win\, but it’s the longest fishing tales of the one that got away that keep this family tradition alive and swimming. \nEvery spring since 1980\, on the weekend after the Victoria Day holiday\, Belwood Lake is a busy spot with boat loads of anglers looking to cast out for the big win. First prize is $2000.00\, but there is even more prizes in both adult and youth categories\, including early bird draws\, door prizes and draws. Be sure to bring the kids\, because every angler under the age of 8 years old is guaranteed a prize. \nReel it in and take part in this annual competition\, the biggest annual fundraiser for the Belwood Lions Club – supporting local initiatives for youth and community in the Township of Centre Wellington. \nWhether you catch a pike or just make memories with your pals\, this is great event with a proud history.  So\, fish on! \n

SUMMARY:Grand River Raceway Open House
DESCRIPTION:It’s not every day you get to drive a real racehorse\, so here is your chance! \nCome to Grand River Raceway for their annual Open House on Sunday\, May 27 and get a behind the scenes look at horse racing in a fun\, interactive way. \nFree and open to all ages\, drop in any time between 11am and 2pm. \nA full tour of the Open House’s six main stations will last approximately one hour. The itinerary includes the unique opportunity to drive a racehorse. \nAdmission is free\, but participants are urged to make a $10 donation (per family) at the door to support local organizations which aid in the retraining and placement of retired racehorses into new riding and driving careers. A BBQ lunch and beverages will be available for purchase between 11:30 – 2:00. \nOther interactive stations include a tour of the judges’ stand and announcer’s booth high atop the grandstand with track announcer Gary Guy. \nBack in the barn\, visitors will learn about the basics of breeding\, owning\, training\, driving and caring for racehorses. Guests can also view and learn about the equipment and techniques required to maintain the racetrack surface. The starting car will also be on display\, and open for photo opportunities. \nMembers of Standardbred Showcase and Racing Under Saddle Ontario will be onsite to demonstrate the versatility of the Standardbred racehorse in different disciplines. \nRepresentatives from the Youth Literary Derby will also join the Open House to chat with youngsters and parents about their horse-themed writing contest designed to engage Ontario-resident youngsters in Grades 5 through 8. \nNo registration is required for the Open House. The event is suitable for all ages\, but children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. The Open House will run rain or shine. Participants are urged to wear closed-toe shoes and casual\, comfortable clothing. Helmets and safety vests will be provided. \nThe Grand River Raceway Open House is presented in cooperation with the Hands On Horses Program and the Ontario Harness Horse Association. \nThis is a rain or shine event. \nHold on and get ready for an adventure like no other at one of the prettiest horse racing facilities in Ontario! \n  \nPhoto credit: Iron Horse Photography
